It is the homeowner's responsibility to obtain a pool enclosure permit.  we recommend that you contact your municipality and make the application as soon as possible.

There may be some Specific requirements regarding backwash, fencing or other issues that are unique to your area. Replacement pools are normally grandfathered into the permit for the previous pool, but you should double check with your municipality. Mermaid must fill your pool with water immediately upon install. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are compliant with all bylaw requirements. You may require temporary fencing if you do not meet requirements prior to the install.

All building permit applications are now done online through your My Service Ottawa account. If you don’t already have an account please refer to the link below to set up your My Service Ottawa account.

Homeowner Pool Dismantling & Site Preparation Requirements:

1. Remove all Backfill/Stone Away From the Pool Before Dismantling: This is important to prevent debris from falling into the pool base area.

2. After Dismantling, Cover the Area with Tarp or Old Liner: This helps keep the base from becoming saturated with water. If the base becomes contaminated with debris or overly wet, it could lead to additional charges and delays while waiting for the site to dry.

3. Installers are NOT Equipped for Landscaping or Site Clearing : They require free and clear access to the pool. Please remove any vegetation or gardens against the pool wall to ensure a safe, unobstructed workspace.

4. Photo requirement: To ensure a smooth installation process, please submit 3–4 photos of the prepared site (after the pool is removed) at least 3 days prior to your scheduled installation date.

IMPORTANT: FAILURE TO DO ANY OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED MAY RESULT IN ADDITIONAL CHARGES OR DELAYS/RESCHEDULING.
If you have an existing deck the installer will build the pool as close to the deck as possible, keep in mind that the builder requires a bit of room to work between the deck and pool. Also, if this is a replacement pool, the pool will not fit into the same footprint as your previous pool and you may have to modify your deck. If you are planning on building a deck after the pool has been installed, remember to keep the deck back 4" or more from the pool. It is not recommended to build a deck that will over-hang the pool. Above ground pools are designed to move on the ground. Do not put any type of backfill against the pool, as this voids all warranties. The track should be free and clear at all times. Should there be obstructions the pool may suffer damages and these types of damage are not covered by warranty.

It is mandatory that someone over the age of 18 be home both for the delivery and the day of the installation.
Prior to the date of the installation please mark the ground using posts, sticks or paint where you want the pool located, so that there is no confusion over location. It is your responsibility to make sure the placement of your pool complies with all municipal regulations and bylaws
The installation price is based on clear, level and reasonable access. Long distances for carrying materials may result in extra charges.
Leveling, pad construction or retaining walls are NOT included in the price of your installation. The area where the pool is to be located needs to be level in order to erect the pool. If the area is not level it will have to be leveled at your expense. Does the intended location of the pool have any slope or incline? If leveling is required there is a charge paid directly to the installers. Leveling charges specific to your pool are outlined on Pg.1 of your contract. If the location is out of level more than 12" from original grade, you may have to hire a 3rd party contractor with mechanical equipment, i.e. backhoes and bob cats and mechanical compactor to prepare and compact the area. A retaining wall may also be required. The site preparation work would typically be done prior to the arrival of our installation crew. If you suspect you will require more than standard levelling please speak to our install department to avoid potential delays and additional costs. Please note that Mermaid will not warranty bases built by 3rd party contractors.

⚠️
IMPORTANT: If you or a third party prepare the pool base, do not install any type of tarp or landscaping fabric under pool area. Please remove sod, level with granular and finish off with stone dust, Use a mechanical compactor to compact every 3" of rise. We do not recommend the use of any type of weed barrier under the pool pad.

Please advise if you have rock, trees or roots in the area that you plan to have your pool installed. These obstacles could cause delays because the installer may not be equipped to remove them. The services of a third party contractor may be required in this instance. We recommend that you purchase a liner guard if you have not done so (Keep in mind should roots or rocks be present, we may not be able to remove them all).

As stated previously we need a solid base in order to install your pool and warrant the base. It is extremely important to let us know if any of the following things apply to you: Your home is a new build and is less than 2 years old. Any excavation has been done and or you have changed the grade near or directly where you would like to have the pool installed in the last 2 years. If the soil has been disturbed, grade has been changed or your builder requires a certain amount of time to pass before any backyard renovations can be completed, we may not be able to install your pool at this time.

If this is a replacement pool; Was the previous pool dished, bowled or scooped in the center? If so, it will have to be filled in as our liners do not lend themselves to be stretched for this style of installation. (It puts to much stress on the liner and the liner will snap above or below the seam). Cost to add materials and compact to be established by installer at time of installation.

Drainage is critical to the longevity of your pool. Water must not accumulate at or around the pool structure. Please ensure that water from eaves trough or runoff from a slope is directed away from the pool.
You will require 2 patio stones (2' x 2' each) upon which to install the pump & filter. These can be purchased at home improvement stores. If you have purchased a step or safety ladder with an outside ladder we recommend that the outside ladder be installed on two patio stones.
Included with the pool kit is enough hose to put the pump/filter (heater if included) a maximum of 4 feet from the pool. It is not recommended to put pump further, it will overheat and shorten life expectancy.
The pump is cord connected and the manufacturer recommends that it be plugged directly into a 20 AMP dedicated GFCI receptacle with a minimum # 12 wire. Extension cords should not be used. Use of an extension cord to run the system will cause the pump to overheat and burnout prematurely, voiding the warranty.
Ionizers are comprised of two parts, a cell and a control panel. The cell is installed beside the pump and filter, directly onto the return jet unit. The power pack is plugged into a 20 AMP GFCI receptacle. The pool installer will install the cell, he will NOT install the power pack. The manufacturer recommends that the power pack be installed on a post (which is provided by the customer, please consult your electrician on proper placement).

Once you have the pool running balance your pool chemistry, plug the power pack into the outlet and turn the power pack on. It is important to check your water chemistry often as it is easy to over chlorinate. Over chlorination can cause damage to the liner, seals, pump & filter and heater. Each of our stores offer water analysis at no charge.
Natural Gas or Propane Heaters:
If you have purchased a natural gas or propane heater on your contract, for installation, a heater pad will be required by the Gas Code and by default is not included. Before installation it is important that you consult with your gas fitter for the proper placement of your gas heater. The gas fitter will take all codes and regulations into consideration before selecting the location. If Mermaid Pools is providing the base and performing the plumbing connections it is required that the position of the heater be clearly marked on the ground by your gas fitter prior to installation. Mermaid Pools is not responsible for any issues arising from the heater location.

Heat Pumps
Customers are to provide 4 patio stones (2' x 2' each) for the base. Your electrician must clearly mark the location of the heat pump prior to installation and ensure that all relevant codes and set-backs are adhered to. Mermaid Pools is not responsible for any issues arising from improperly sited heat pumps.

Unless it has been contracted for, installation of ladder, step, heater, solar roller/blanket, and on pool fencing is not included in the basic pool installation price. The installation of any of these items is considered an extra and has a separate charge. If you have purchased installation of a ladder, step, heater, solar roller/blanket or fencing it is possible that the installation may not be done by the pool installer but by the service department. Once the pool has been installed the service department will contact you and schedule an installation date. Please refer to your pool contract to see which accessories are being installed by the service department or with pool if any.
In the event that on-pool fencing is being installed, it will be completed after the installation of the pool itself.
At the time of the pool installation the installer will install a copper bonding wire, on a wall bolt, at the wall joint. It is up to your Certified/Master Electrician to pick up this bonding wire and continue on to bond all components of your pool as required by the Electrical Safety Authority.

Your Master/Certified electrician is responsible to contact the Electrical Safety Authority for a permit and inspection of any electrical work done. Making sure to ask your Master/Certified Electrician if they have previous knowledge on pools.

YOUR VARIABLE SPEED PUMP WILL NOT FUNCTION UNLESS PLUGGED DIRECTLY INTO A 20 AMP DEDICATED GFCI OUTLET
It is important to have your pool filled immediately upon installation, so as to prevent wrinkles in the liner and wind damage to the structure. Mermaid can help you find a water delivery service if you are unable to. It is your responsibility to provide water for your pool and pay the driver directly. Your pool must be filled with water immediately upon install. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are compliant with all bylaw requirements. You may require temporary fencing if you do not meet requirements prior to the install.

On the scheduled date of your installation, should it rain, we may have to reschedule your installation to the next available rain day and you will be notified. Other factors may cause delays such as high wind, excessive heat, cold temperatures, mechanical break down, illness etc. Due to the aforementioned, any scheduled subcontractors will be likewise affected or delayed.
Our installers lift sod and prepare the ground, if you require sod or excavated earth removed from site please hire a third party.
The installer will ask for the contract balance, this is payable to mermaid on the completion of the installation. Should there be leveling or extras these are payable directly to the installer.

THE POOL SYSTEM CANNOT BE STARTED FOR 24 HOURS AFTER INSTALLATION

The glued fittings have to dry.  Starting system sooner then 24 hours could result in leaks and a chargeable service call.
It is important to gather all documents, manufacturer warranties, and owner manuals that arrive with your pool kit. Please review and register warranties as required.

We advise you to contact your homeowner’s insurance company and inform them that you are installing an Above Ground pool and that you require full coverage on the pool.
